“Knowledge
is a weapon. I intend to be formidably armed.”
– Terry Goodkind
Born in Omaha on this date in 1948,
Goodkind now makes his home in Maine, a place he said he always was intended to
be. Best known for his epic fantasy
series The Sword of Truth and his contemporary suspense novel The Law
of Nines, he planned to be a cabinet and violinmaker while doing marine and
wildlife painting on the side. But he
was drawn to storytelling and ultimately began writing.
He found that he was “a natural for
fantasy tales” and his resulting works and massive sales proved him
correct. To date his works have sold
well over 30 million copies and been translated into 20 different
languages. His newest, Into Darkness, is
the 4th in his “Children of D’hara” series (a part of his Sword of Truth Universe).
Goodkind said his novels are more
than just traditional fantasy because of their focus on philosophical and human
themes. The fantasy genre, he said,
allows him to better convey the human themes and emotions he desires to share.
“Fantasy allows you bend the world
and the situation to more clearly focus on the moral aspects of what's
happening,” he said. “In fantasy you
can distill life down to the essence of your story. “
