Bottom of FormTop of FormBorn in Illinois on this date in 1945, Eisenberg is primarily a short story writer who also is an actress, a professor of writing at Columbia University, and author of the play Pastorale.  And she is an off-and-on writer of essays for The New Yorker and the New York Time Review of Books among others. 

 

A graduate of The New School in New York City, she is known for a writing style that melds crystalline prose, emotional nuance, and wry wit in her distinctive portraits of contemporary American life.


Among her many honors are a Rea Award for the Short Story (for significant contribution to the short story form), Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellowships, and six O. Henrys (the Gold Standard for short story writing). Her most recent book, The Collected Stories of Deborah Eisenberg, won the prestigious PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction.
