'You get ideas all the time'

“Write your story as it needs to be written. Write it honestly, and tell it as best you can. I'm not sure that there are any other rules. Not ones that matter.” – Neil Gaiman

I’ve written about Gaiman before, but since today is his birthday (he's 61), I thought a couple more mentions – particularly his interesting quote above – were in order.

If there’s a master of modern day short stories, of course, it’s probably this talented British author, who also has made his marks in comic books, graphic novels, audio theatre, screenwriting and, yes, even a novel or two.  For his efforts, he’s won about every possible writing award.

Seemingly tireless, he also has written a few biographies, including the immensely successful one on the band Duran, Duran.  He said his mind is constantly active and he’s always on the lookout for something new to either write about, talk about (he does a radio
show), or review (he’s a reviewer, too).

As for where to get ideas?    “You get ideas from daydreaming. You get ideas from being bored. You get ideas all the time. The only difference between writers and other people is we notice when we're doing it.”  And writing them down.
