“What I've
come to know is that in life, it's not always the questions we ask, but rather
our ability to hear the answers that truly enriches our understanding. Never,
never stop learning.” – Lester Holt
Journalists
strive for the tags of honor and trust.
The late Walter Cronkite and Edward R. Murrow are two that come almost
instantly to mind. But in recent years
that trust has been lacking. One current
broadcaster who fits the criteria is Lester Holt, who celebrates a birthday
today.
Lester
Holt
Holt,
who started broadcasting as a disk jockey for a Country Western radio station, has
long been a leader in the field with his Weekend
News and Dateline NBC anchor
roles. He now has taken his thoughtful
and integrity-filled role to the NBC Nightly
News in the wake of the scandal surrounding former anchor Brian
Williams. It only has taken him a couple
of months to earn America’s full respect for the job he does, and to move the
network into the number one spot because of it.
“As
Americans, we rightfully place tremendous value on having a free and
independent press,” Holt said. “Our role
as journalists is to give voice to the voiceless, and hold our leaders and
institutions accountable. But the circle
is only completed when that information is consumed by a free-thinking and
engaged audience.”
Wise words that
we, the consumers, all should take to heart.
