“What
I've come to know is that in life, it's not always the questions we ask, but
rather our ability to hear the answers that truly enriches our understanding.
Never, never stop learning.” – Lester Holt
Journalists strive for the tags of
honor and trust. The late Walter
Cronkite and Edward R. Murrow are two that come almost instantly to mind. And a current broadcaster who fits those
criteria is NBC Nightly News anchor
Lester Holt, born in California on this date in 1959.
Holt started broadcasting as a disk
jockey for a Country Western radio station while also studying full time at
California State University in Sacramento.
After a series of jobs at smaller stations around the state, he joined NBC
News in 2000, starting as a general reporter, then to the Weekend News and Dateline
anchor positions. He’s been NBC Nightly News anchor since 2015,
leading the network into the number position with his thoughtful and
integrity-filled news presentation and analysis.
“As Americans, we rightfully place
tremendous value on having a free and independent press,” Holt said. “Our role as journalists is to give voice to
the voiceless, and hold our leaders and institutions accountable. But the circle is only completed when that
information is consumed by a free-thinking and engaged audience.”
